How to Get Started with Save the Cat!® Story Suite

When we created Save the Cat! Story Suite, the goal was to make it easy to get started.
Whether you’re working on a screenplay, a novel, or a TV pilot and series, everything begins in one place—and builds from there.
Start with a Project
When you open Story Suite, you can start something new or bring in something you’ve already been working on. You set the basics:
- title
- logline
- genre (story type)
That’s your starting point.
Move Through the Story
One of the things we focused on early was making sure you’re not locked into one way of working.
Across the top of the app, you’ll see different ways to look at your story:
- the beats
- the board
- your script or manuscript
And depending on the project: chapters, episodes, or installments.
Same story. Different view.
Build as You Go
As your story takes shape, you start adding what it needs.
Characters. Locations. Relationships. Notes.
You don’t have to define everything upfront.
You build it as you go.
And when you want to go deeper, you can expand any part of the story—developing characters, refining locations, and tracking how everything connects.
Adjust as the Story Changes
Stories don’t stay still.
You move scenes. You rethink moments. You shift structure.
Cards can be moved, edited, expanded, or removed.
So the story can evolve without forcing you to start over.
Write When You’re Ready
At a certain point, you move from shaping the story to writing it.
When you step into the script or the manuscript, everything you’ve already built is there.
You’re not starting from scratch—you’re continuing the work.
Work Solo or Collaborate
You can build your story on your own—or with others.
Projects can be shared and developed together, while everything stays connected in one place.
